eWallet GO! Makes Cloud Storage Safer

Friday, May 6th, 2011

eWallet GO!With recent news about a possible security breach for a cloud-based secure information manager and discussions like this one at various sites around the web, we wanted to say a few things about eWallet GO!TM With eWallet GO! we’ve developed a solution that gives you the convenience of cloud based storage and sharing while significantly reducing the risk!

When you backup your information to Dropbox or Google Docs from eWallet GO! you’re backing up a fully encrypted file. This file features the power of 256-bit AES encryption. Even if someone managed to get this backup file, as long as you’ve chosen a strong password, it is effectively impossible for them to access your personal information stored in eWallet GO! And when we decrypt your data so you can view it, it all happens locally – we never, EVER send your password over the internet.

But how safe is safe?

But what does this “256-bit” stuff mean? In a great article on Wikipedia about what it would take to hack a file using 256-bit AES encryption, they offer the following:

A device that could check a billion billion (1018) AES keys per second (if such a device could ever be made) would in theory require about 3×1051 years to exhaust the 256-bit key space.

In other words, a really good password using 256-bit AES encryption is effectively unhackable by anything outside of science fiction. Humans will have constructed a Dyson Sphere around the sun and shed our mortal forms by the time someone can get to your data.

Good Passwords Required!

There is a caveat – the security is only as good as the password. First, we all know choosing a password another person could guess is a bad idea. We also know that we should never leave the password where someone else could find it, and we know that we should never pick a word that appears in the dictionary. We hear this advice time and again from security experts, and it’s true!

But what about a “brute force” attack, where a hacker uses a computer to guess the password by trying different combinations of letters, numbers, and symbols? In this case, the longer the password, the harder it becomes to crack. How hard? Let me give you a couple of examples:

An 8-digit password using all lowercase letters would take, in theory, around 3-6 years to hack with brute force.

An 8-digit password using a combination of lowercase, uppercase, numbers, and symbols would take, in theory, around 4000-8000 years to hack with brute force.

That’s right – if your password is f8#$mGQ! it could take 4-8 THOUSAND years to figure it out using an off-the shelf computer and the appropriate software.

And here’s the best part – length benefits are exponential! Add one more character – and now it might take 250-500 THOUSAND YEARS to hack your password.

At the end of the day, you don’t have to sacrifice convenience for security. With eWallet GO! you get all the benefits of cloud based storage and sharing while significantly reducing the risk.

‘Tis the season…for making lots of lists

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

The holidays are almost here! That means celebrating with friends and family, lots of yummy food, and sharing gifts. But we all know the holiday season also means stress – packed shopping malls, last-minute phone calls to figure out who’s getting Aunt Ida from the airport, repeat trips to the grocery store where you break the record for how many times one person can forget to buy the gravy … the list goes on.

And that’s why ListPro® is so very handy – you can make lists of absolutely anything you want to track for the holidays, put those lists on your device, and have them ready right when you need them. No more forgetting your husband’s sweater size, or which Lego set your nephew wanted, when you’re buying gifts. No more mishaps with planning the big family get-together. And when you’re buying the food – you’ll only have to make one trip, and you’ll definitely remember the gravy!

What else makes ListPro great for the holidays? Read on for more details and ideas… (more…)

ListPro in the New York Times

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

We just released ListPro for iPhone last week. Not only has the response from customers been incredible, but this morning the New York Times mentioned ListPro for iPhone and Windows PC in an article from their Personal Tech section. The article said:

ListPro, a desktop software application that help users manage lists of all kinds, is now available as a free iPhone app. With it, you may create and manage lists, or choose from existing templates. For $20, you can download the desktop version (for Windows only) and sync your lists.

From a business perspective, even a quick mention like this is fantastic (Thanks, Bob Tedeschi!) From a personal perspective, however, seeing something you worked so hard to create get a mention in the New York Times is just incredibly cool!

You can read the entire article, including some great advice about managing business cards using your mobile device, at the New York Times website.

Talk Like a Pirate Day Lists!

Friday, September 17th, 2010

As many of you scurvy dogs may know, I’m a huge fan of Talk Like a Pirate Day. If ever there was a holiday this world desperately needed, it was this one. Officially, Talk Like a Pirate Day is September 19th, but in preparation for the holiday and to celebrate the release of ListPro for iPhone, I’ve posted two pirate-themed lists on the List Exchange.

The first is the official ListPro Talk Like a Pirate Day list! With the blessings of the good folks in charge of Talk Like a Pirate Day, I’ve created a set of lists that include the origins of Talk Like a Pirate Day, a Pirate Dictionary, and “His and Hers” Pirate Pick-Up Lines! I can’t thank the folks over at Talk Like a Pirate Day enough for their support on this. Make sure to visit the official site to learn more about this awesome holiday!

The second is another Pirate Dictionary, this one compliments of the folks at the publishing company, Tide-Mark Press. It’s a great dictionary of pirate words and terms! Again, we really appreciate their support and encourage everyone to check out their site!

Windows PC and Windows Mobile users can download these special Talk Like A Pirate Day lists here (TalkLikeAPirateDay) and here (TideMarkPirateDictionary).

iPhone ListPro users can download the lists by tapping the List Exchange button at the Home View of ListPro on their device.

ListPro for iPhone is now available! And it’s free!

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

I’m extremely excited to announce that we just released ListPro for iPhone and iPod touch. It’s been a long time coming, but we’re very happy with the result and we think you will be too. Not only does it include many of the great features that have made ListPro so popular on other platforms, but the new iPhone version is free.

As you probably know, ListPro isn’t like other list-makers – ListPro is a complete list-making tool kit. It doesn’t limit you to one or two simple list types. With ListPro we give you the tools you need to contruct the perfect list for your needs. From a project tracking list to a mico-database for your book collection, you can do it all with ListPro.

At the same time, we understand that there are times when all you need is that simple list – and you need it now. To solve that problem, we’ve introduced List Protals. List Portals let you create some of the most commonly used list types, quickly, easily, and with a feature set specially geared toward those types of lists.

And of course, as we mentioned, ListPro for iPhone is free! All the power of ListPro at a price you, quite literally, can’t beat. This was made possible by Apple’s iAds. We know there is a right way and a wrong way to do ad supported software, but we think we did it the right way with ListPro. The only place you see the ad is on the home screen, and it doesn’t use up space needed for other things. No ads covering your list items or getting in the way when you’re editing. We think it’s a great way to handle ads, and we hope you’ll agree.

Finally, ListPro for iPhone and iPod touch offers complete, item-level synchronization with ListPro for Windows PC. It’s a great way to have your lists at your fingertips all the time.

ListPro for iPhone and iPod touch is available at the iTunes App Store for free and will run on all iOS 4 devices. ListPro for Windows PC is available from our online store for $19.95, but if you already own ListPro 5.0 you can download ListPro 5.1 (needed to sync with iPhone) for free. If you own an older version of ListPro (for any platform) you can upgrade to 5.1 here for just $10.00.

We hope you love ListPro as much as we do. We use it for everything here, and we’re extremely excited to see it hit the App Store. And if you have ideas, questions, or requests, just let us know! We have a list of features we hope to add in the future and would love to hear your thoughts!
