eWallet for iPhone: The Movie!

July 10, 2008 by Marc

Pull up a chair and grap the popcorn! It’s eWallet for iPhone: The Movie! We know people are dying to get their hands on eWallet for iPhone but we’re still waiting on Apple!* In the meantime, we put together this short (about 1 minute, 40 seconds) demo video for you so that you can see the new software in action! Enjoy!

The movies are in Quicktime format (seemed appropriate considering it’s for an Apple product) and are provided in three different resolutions for your viewing pleasure!

High Res (11 MB)
Med Res (9 MB)
Low Res (5 MB)

 * “What’s the hold up?” you ask. While we aren’t entirely sure, it looks like it has something to do with export approval. As most of your know our 256-bit AES encryption is exteremly powerful – so powerful, in fact, that we have to get a variety of government approvals to export eWallet (yep – an eWallet program so powerful exporting it to the wrong people is a potential security threat!) So anyhow, Apple has told us that it should be in the store by the 11th so we’re still hoping to make the “It’s Out!” announcement tomorrow!

eWallet 6.1 is Out!

July 9, 2008 by Marc

eWallet 6.1 is now available! With features like customizable field types, card shortcuts,a new search, and easier to edit templates, this new version has a lot to love. And best of all, it’s a free upgrade to owners of eWallet 6.0.

I’ve already mentioned the main new features but let me elaborate a little!

  • Customizable Field Types: Now you can change the type for any field in your cards. Set additional fields as “hidden”, add more live URLs, specify which fields are used in AutoPass, and more!
  • Shortcuts: Create card shortcuts in your wallet to access cards from multiple categories. This is a great way to build a “favorites” category that contains your most used cards, without moving the originals around!
  • New Search:No more hopping card to card when searching! eWallet 6.1 provides you with a list of cards that match the search criteria.
  • Improved Template Editing:We’ve cleaned up template editing to make it even easier to make your own card templates. Mix in the Field Type feature and eWallet gives you a ton of power when it comes to designing your own cards!

And of course we’ve made a number of minor changes, but in some cases they are requests we’ve been hearing from you so for those of you who asked for them, these “little things” are a big deal!

  • Card Background Gradient is Optional: Now you can turn off the gradient for card backgrounds.
  • Easier Smartphone Editing: No more tap-move-tap, tap-move-tap to edit cards on Windows Mobile Smartphones (those of you who have been wanting this will know what I mean!) Just scroll from field to field when editing.
  • Space Optimization:We’ve worked to optimize the way eWallet uses memory on your device. From minor “tweaks” to making sure eWallet only installs the graphics you need, we streamlined the application.
  • Faster Start-up: Not every user will see an improvement but thanks to some of our streamlining, some users will see an improved start-up time! And for those of you using lots of custom icons, don’t worry! We’re still working to improve start-up there as well!
  • New “Options” Interface:We’ve made it easier to personalize eWallet on your desktop by cleaning up some of eWallet’s options and placing them in a new Options interface. Just select Tools->Options. And watch for additional personalizing options here in future versions!

As you can see there is a lot to like about eWallet 6.1 and as a free upgrade for 6.0 owners or a discounted upgrade for 5.0 users, the price is right! And the best part is we’re already working on 6.2!

Thanks! And as always, let us know if you have any questions! We’re here to help!

eWallet for iPhone Sneak Preview…

July 1, 2008 by Marc

With the (predicted) AppStore release date swiftly approaching, I wanted to take a second to give you a sneak peak at eWallet for iPhone. I am extremely excited about this application. It looks great, it’s easy to use, and while we’ve captured the iPhone feel it is in every way the eWallet software you’ve come to know and love.

Of course this will generate the usual question:

“When will it be released?”

We hope to see it available in the AppStore around the time that the AppStore goes live but we don’t know exactly when eWallet will be available. First, as far as I understand it, no one is 100% sure when the AppStore will go live. Second, we don’t have control over the process used to post applications. We send Apple the application, they look it over, decide if it is “fit for the AppStore” and then put the application out there for the public. This whole process happens according to Apple’s timetable.

What I can tell you is that we have a finished product (I’ve been using it on my own iPhone for some time now) and we’re ready to roll as soon as Apple gives us the go ahead! So watch this space! We’ll definitely make some noise the minute the software is available!

Dangerous Marketing

May 19, 2008 by Marc

Marketing is a tricky business, and one wrong move can set you back twice as far as a good campaign can move you forward. We recently posted an article entitled “Windows has left the building!”, talking about an ill-conceived marketing tag-line that appeared at the Microsoft website. The reason this caught our eye wasn’t just a chance to laugh at Microsoft. We happen to like Microsoft a LOT over here at Ilium Software. Instead, it was a chance to see how even a company like Microsoft, with all of its resources, can miss something simple and end up hurt by it.

First impressions are a huge part of marketing. It isn’t about what the customer thinks after they’ve taken time to dig into your message and really understand it. The sad reality is that most customers never bother. Rather, it is the immediate, visceral response your message generates.

Using the “Windows has left the building!” tag-line as an example, the phrase is (obviously for many folks) based off the famous “Elvis has left the building!” line. Using a well known and familiar line and tweaking it is a great way to strike a familiar chord in your audience. Unfortunately, the original line was about the King leaving the stage. The show was over. Everyone could go home. It wasn’t about Elvis hitting the street to do a show for the crowd out there. He was done. Finis.

So, when Microsoft uses this line they are accidentally saying, “Show’s over folks! The King is done and has left the stage!” Someone at the Microsoft PR firm deserves a swift kick for this snafu. I mean yeah, when you think it through you can figure out what they mean, but unfortunately by then it is too late. They’ve made their impression.

I’ll leave you with a great, simple example of this that I learned in a fantastic marketing class at University of Michigan. A professor said, “Unless you are an exterminator, never get a flyswatter with your company name on it. Having your product directly associated with bug guts does not create a positive impression in the minds of the customer.”
