eWallet 6.0.1 Released!

March 4, 2008 by Marc

wallet120_thumbnail.jpgI’m happy to announce that we just released eWallet 6.0.1. If you aren’t having any trouble with eWallet 6.0, don’t worry about getting this one. It just cleans up a few things, corrects a couple of specific problems, and improves on a few things like graphic installations. Here is a short list describing some of the things we changed in this release:

  • – Improved startup speed
  • – Added an extra Vista icon
  • – Plays nicer with UAC in Vista
  • – Humanized some error messages
  • – Fixed a couple problems with FlexWallet conversion
  • – Auto Backup now does a backup whenever you close the wallet (as opposed to before when it only backed up if you exited the program)
  • – Optimized FlexWallet icons for different devices and now FlexWallet Icon Pack only installs the icons you need for your device (which should speed up startup time as well!)
  • – Plus a bunch of minor tweaks

And as some of you know, we’ve had a few folks who, when they install the full FlexWallet icon pack, see a slowdown in the startup. The changes in this version should help but we’re still working on this issue for 6.1 as well. We’ve got some ideas that we think will speed things up even more.

Anyhow, you can download the latest version from our here and 6.0 unlock codes will still work with 6.0.1.

Marching Forward with Another Winner

March 3, 2008 by Julie

winner.jpg

March is here – does that mean spring is around the corner where you live? Not for us, unfortunately, where it isn’t surprising to have random snow showers even into April in Michigan. Oh well – so March might not necessarily mean spring is on its way, but the good news is a brand-new month means free software for one lucky person!

We had some really good discussion this past month, particularly on the post Sneak Peek at eWallet 6.1, which started back in January but just kept right on going through last month. And that post is where we found our latest winner: Sharon – congratulations! I just sent you an email explaining how to get your prize. If you don’t receive it, reply to this post and let me know.

To all of our other readers – thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts – keep coming back, because next month the winner could be you!

Any Mobile Masterminds?

February 18, 2008 by Ellen

Several years ago, we registered MobileMasterMind.com, intending to make a general info/help kind of site for mobile device info. Like too very many of our good intentions, we never got around to doing anything about it, and our ownership of the domain is expiring this week.

I was going to let it expire, but Marc suggested that someone who reads this blog might want it, so if anyone does, post a reply here saying so by Wednesday of this week. I’ll renew it for a year and transfer it to anyone interested. If more than one person is interested, I’ll let Julie pick who gets it using her secret random winner picking method.

And don’t forget that part 3 of Eten Blog dot Com’s Developer Interview series is now online. It was originally designed to be a 3-part article, but there’s going to be at least one set of followup questions as well.

I Love this Article

February 11, 2008 by Ellen

pcmag.gifSascha Segan, of PC Magazine, wrote a great column called Pay Now or Pay Later. He points out the real costs of buying low-cost electronics, including

“hidden charges, shoddy products, lousy tech support, a poisoned environment, lost U.S. jobs, and starving workers … the loss of things like customer service, reliability, durability, and flexibility”

and says that

“the relentless cost-cutting brought on by a culture where low prices are the ultimate goal has led to the complete demise of tech support, the most labor-intensive part of the tech process and one that’s invisible in advertisements and on shelves.”

Please read it – it’s well worth the time.

“Smart” Systems

February 7, 2008 by Marc

smartcomp.jpgPeople are always talking about “smart” systems. These are automated systems that are meant to make a company more efficient, drive sales, and provide a great customer experience. Often, and unfortunately, the implementation of these systems goes hand in hand with cutting back on the role of real people in the process. Time and again, these “smart” systems prove incredibly stupid.

This whole issue is particularly important to us right now, because we’re working on some “smart” systems of our own. Where are they a good thing and where are they a pain? How do you use them in a way that really does make life better rather than more complicated? Read on for my thoughts and a chance to voice your own opinion!
